Have you tried talking to your teacher initially? I question because I am a teacher. Not for a college or university, but it still really bothers me when a student is struggling with something and hasn’t told me about it, and then I find out from someone else. No teacher is perfect (especially when they are just starting), and any excellent teacher will want to know what is effective or not effective for their students and try to improve their practice. You may get nothing out of him or he may be rude to you but then you will know for sure that he should not be where he is, and you can have no qualms about going to someone higher up about it. Just approach him nicely about it so he doesn’t get too defensive. Clarify that you’re all really excited to learn from his experiences, but a lot of you are having vex understanding some of the material and comprehending the tests. Maybe he could have them translated by a colleague or a teacher’s assistant or grad student?

If you do go to someone else, just be strict of how you approach it. Clarify that your concerned for your entire class that you may not be learning as much as you’d all like because you find him and his tests very hard to know. Do have a copy of the test to show in case they want an example. Say that you reckon he has a lot to offer but could use some coaching and a bit of extra help with translation. But do try to fit in there somewhere if they seem to take it seriously that you really don’t want to upset the whole course for everyone, and everyone is willing to read the required information from the text, but you want everyone to be able to really described their knowledge on the final exam to get an appropriate grade and not be mixed up because they can’t know the question. Clarify that you’d be grateful for their help but don’t want to jeopardize anyone’s degree/diploma/course, but you also wanted them to know for next term or next year, because you know how hard it has been for you and your fellow age group, so you don’t want next year’s class to struggle as well.

I hope that all makes sense and that it helps you. Just don’t go barging in and complain like its an all or nothing thing. Just question them to help your class in some way. Usually if you place it that way, you will find a softie who will try to help you and the teacher. If you don’t get anywhere after a small bit, then and only then, barge in and complain if you feel the need. Sometimes, its necessary. But only if you’ve tried the nice way initially.

Oh, I know I didn’t comment on the photocopy cost thing, not sure what to say, that’s just weird. Do any of your other teachers charge for that? I would have thought the school paid for that, but perhaps he has to? Is he just a guest teacher or something? Maybe he isn’t part of the full-time faculty so he doesn’t have a budget he can use?
